A Good example of the Swedish M63 Target Rifle
All of these rifles were produced from May 1963 onwards and were made from existing rifles. Receivers were used from M94 and M96 weapons – no new receivers were used. The majority were Carl Gustaf weapons, as this is. They were produced in two calibres, .308 and the standard 6.5 x 55 Swedish – this is the later. Heavy barrels were added along with many other fine tuned components to produce these really excellently accurate rifles. A good half of the free-floating barrel is exposed, target sights have been added and a much heavier, more comfortable pistol grip ambidextrous stock was added. A different trigger guard was added along with much attention spent upon the refinement of the trigger mechanism. The end result was a superbly accurate shooting platform.
This M63 by Carl Gustafs is 49″ long overall. The heavy round blued barrel is 29″ long and contributes to the increased weight of the rifle. The full rifle weighing in at 4.5kg. The trigger Pull is 13.1/2″ to centre. The trigger is grooved and the outer of the trigger guard ring is extra heavily knurled to proved for extra purchase. Hard rubber butt-plate which absorbs more recoil. The ingenious fore-end cap does not contact with the barrel and is easily removed by the spring clip attached over also incorporates the forward sling swivel.
Very good heavy pistol grip stock has a swelling on both sides to allow for left or right handed shooters. Shows signs of use but nothing noteworthy. Tunnel around fore-sight. The round receiver is marked over the crest with the Crown and CG monogram over; “CARL GUSTAF STADS/ GEVARSFAKTORI/1916” The action outer wall is also marked with; “H.K.” Helge Kolthoff chief weapons inspection officer from 1912 to 1923. Then the serial number “74694” this puts production at Carl Gustafs in the year 1900 ! Perhaps this receiver was never issued and used later? Adjacent to the serial number is a crowned “C/64” this is the date it was turned into a target rifle. Next to that the last marking is a rune on its side, meaning it has been re-proofed.
On the rear receiver bridge is mounted a Soderin adjustable sight. Not all components on these rifles are matching but this is to be expected due to the modification process. However, the bolt on this rifle does match the receiver as it is mostly marked with the “694” of the serial number but the safety flag is numbered to another rifle. The bolts on these M63’s are different to the others in that they have an upward concave sculpturing to them, but remain horizontal when closed down. Bolt is finished in the white. Magazine floor plate carries another number. This is a very good example of one of Carl Gustafs most accurate rifles and will hold its own with many of its competitors produced today – 59 years later.
