Model 1874 Pedersoli Sharps Rifle
As always a very good reproduction of the famous Sharps Model 1874 falling block or “Buffalo Rifle” This example is chambered in .40-65 Winchester. These sharps came in many different calibers famously produced in such a way that their primary strength was long distance effectiveness. This enabled the buffalo hunters to take their shot from further away thus being less likely to spook the heard. Unfortunately this ended up almost in the erradication of an entire species and a serious interruption to the Native American Indians of their chief food and raw material supplies. They were also used in other ways throughout the conflicts of the period and an event occurred where a long distance shot was successful at the amazing distance of 1500 plus yards in the Indian wars.
Pedersoli have faithfully reproduced the rifle at a very reasonable price for such a finely finished piece. This is of course second hand but shows little sign of it and retains a fine degree of condition. The octagonal barrel gives it a noticeable weight, but that is of course an advantage in the discipline it is now used in. Of falling block mechanisim with double set triggers and an American Walnut stock, well checkered and finished with no blemishes. Case coloured action, lever, tangs and butt-plate. Also the same finish to the long back lock and the butt-plate. The heavy octagonal barrel is blacked and polished being 32″ long.
Overall the rifle measures 49″. The trigger Pull is 14″ to the front trigger. There is adjustment on the trigger set up with the hard pull being the rear blade and the front being the hair. The serial number is marked upon the upper tang, but covered by the base plate to the tang sight mount. It is repeated in the underside of the barrel reading “SH 19522” with calibre details. A nice touch is the German silver fore-end cap. Fitted to the rifle is a tunnel sight which takes inserts. Action mechanically fine, Bore excellent as practically unused.
A great oportunity to get your shooting hands on a very new “second-hand” rifle for a fraction of the price. All you need to add is your own choice of rear sight. There is a base in position for a Creedmore Type sight but research would be need to expand on that. To my knowledge they don’t make the rifle in this calibre anymore.
