Winchester Pattern 1914 MkI* (Model 1914) ………SOLD

One superb P14 MK I * in its original specification by Winchester

This is the solidly built Mauser action Enfield built by Winchester to back up Britain’s war effort during the First World War.  A superbly strong action mated with a fairly weighty rifle which proved to be such a good shooting platform that it was selected for development into a sniper rifle.  Consequently good results can be obtained in our current civilian shooting environment.  This rifle is serial numbered W169772 on the receiver.  Overall length is 46.3/8″.  Barrel length is 25.3/4″. Trigger pull 13.1/2″.  The serial number is repeated on the top side of the bolt arm.  The underside of the arm is marked with a clear “W” for Winchester and the letters “N.S” for Nickle Steel.  These are repeated on the side of the cocking piece boss which is visible when the bolt is withdrawn.

The side wall of the action carries the clear British War Department Arrow, The George V crossed flags over a “P” proof mark. And finally the circled star of the model designation.  At the rear of the action on the RHS, behind the bolt release, is another clear “W” mark if viewed from the back of the action.  Mounted within the bolt release assembly is the eye-piece of the long range volley sight, which can be flipped up for use, or stowed flat.  This rear component was used in conjunction with the front part of the set up, which is let into the stock just behind  the mid length barrel band.  This consists of a flat dial which is graduated from 1500 to 2600 yards with a pointer.  This is set by hand to achieve a tangent with the eyepiece and then rounds are literally lobbed  into the enemies position causing harassing fire.

The P14 is also equipped with a battle sight and a ladder rear sight which sits on the action bridge.  The ladder is graduated from 200 the 1650 yards and the sliding aperture used on the ladder is nicely cross-hatched to cut down glare from the sighting components.  On the RHS of the action is mounted a safety catch which both locks the cocking piece and “pins” the bolt handle in position.  The bolt knob is hollow and marked underneath with the “BNP” mark.  (British Nitro Proof)  On the RHS of the receiver underneath the serial number is a small gas escape hole.  The condition of the receiver is excellent  and only shows high edge wear.

The magazine floorplate and trigger guard have been sympathetically re-finished and show no wear.  The P14 has an internal five-shot magazine which is fed from the top.  The front sight is guarded and the sight block marked with a “W”.  This P14 has three sling swivels and a serrated trigger.  The curved steel butt-plate has a trap for storing the cleaning components which is currently empty.  The finger-grooved American Black Walnut stock and handguards are in perfect condition with hardly a blemish upon them.   The colour in the stock is rich and pleasing to the eye with a hand finished sheen to it.

On the RHS of the butt-stock is the brass ID disc secured by a brass screw.  Marked as follows: “I. 18 / 1 C BNK /41”  – meaning unknown.  Beside the ID disc under the finish are the correct markings one would expect to find in the butt of such a rifle.  Firstly the broad arrow or crows foot at the top of the group.  Adjacent to the arrow is a clear Star for the MkI *. Below that, within a circle are “1 W”, and below that “PAT  14”  All fairly self explanatory, but, confirming that this stock is correct for the mark and make of this rifle.  Behind the trigger guard on the stock are some faint inspectors and a final proof “P” which can just be seen.  At the other end of the rifle is a bayonet fitting which is combined with the nose cap of the stock.

The rifle is in fine condition and would be a pleasure just to own.   The action functions perfectly well.  The bore is in exceptionally good condition.  It is extremely clean and all the parts of the rifling are sharp and well defined.  It is expected that this rifle is going to shoot very well.
