U.S. Springfield/Krag Model 1898 Bolt Action Rifle.

s/n 343993 .30-40 Krag cal’ (Krag Bayonet NOT included)

30″ round barrel, blue finish and walnut stock. This rifle has the m1902 rear sight. The rifle has a blued barrel band and butt plate. The receiver and loading gate have a pleasing mottled casehardened finish. The bolt is polished bright with a niter blue extractor and a casehardened cocking piece and safety. The stock and hand-guard are oil finished black walnut. The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S/ MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMOURY. 343993” in two lines. The final inspection stamp, “JSA” over “1901” is found on the left side of the stock behind the bolt. The circle “P” mark is stamped behind the trigger-guard. The butt compartment lacks the three piece cleaning rod and oil bottle.

Condition:

The rifle is in very good condition overall with a dark patina over the barrel with light pitting at the muzzle and moderate pitting near the hand-guard. The extractor retains 40% of the nitre blue finish. The loading gate and receiver have a smooth dark mottling grey patina. The usual scattered minor dings and dents adorn the stock and are not unusual for a rifle of the age. The cartouches on the stock are faint but visible. Mechanically the action is fine and the bore is very good.
