K31 Swiss Rifle (Bayonet Optional)
Serial number 820163. Chambered in 7.5mm Swiss. A shorter rifle than its predecessor at 43.1/2.” The barrel is 25.1/2″ long. With the bayonet fitted the rifle measures 56″ in total length. Fully stocked in a light hardwood only 2.3/4″ of barrel is exposed. The exposed section includes the guarded adjustable fore-sight. The fore-sight blade is mounted on a diagonal slide with a + to one side and a – on the other, to aid adjustment.
The fore-end has staggered finger grooves and a side mounted sling bar. The mid band carries a side mounted sling swivel. The butt-stock has a flate steel butt-plate and beneath that is the troopers name who carried the rifle in Switzerland. In this case the name is a Corporal Edward Scholl of Geneva. The stock has a subtle “Tiger Stripe” pattern that extends from the finger grooves backwards. Within the face of the RH but-stock the Swiss shield has been stamped. The stock is in fine condition, with no splits or repairs. On disassembly for proof it was discovered that all the woodwork matches.
The matching serial number “820163” puts production in 1944. This number is stamped into the action and bolt. Also the detachable magazine. The last three numbers 163 can be seen on the rim of the breech end of the barrel, showing that this is the original barrel. That being a fact , when one looks at the condition of the bore the whole package becomes quite impressive. Obviously the use of non-corrosive ammunition has paid off, as condition is excellent. It looks nothing short of new !
The bolt is the short redesigned type with an aluminum handle. The short stroke not only increased rate of fire but also accuracy as it eliminated “head shake”. Bolt release is effected by depression of a sprung release catch below the RHS of the action. Release of the six-shot magazine is by a catch pressed against the RHS of the magazine. The bolt will hold open when the magazine is empty. The rear sights are graduated to 1500 meters.
Atop of the action is the Swiss National Shield. The action is nicely blued as is the barrel and other fittings. The bolt is in the “white”. There is no corrosion to any of the working parts. There is a little wear on the surfaces of the side sling mount, the mind band, some slight edge wear on the rear of the action. There is no corrosion that will interfere with the use or enjoyment of the rifle.
There is a Model 1918 Schmidt Bayonet available with this or the other rifle. It is correct for use with this rifle. The blade is of the reversed fuller type and has an eagle-headed pommel with cross guard. Overall including scabbard it is 17.3/4″ in length. The double edged blade is just short of 30cm long and 26mm wide. Although a little jagged the blade is in excellent condition. The cross guard is exactly 95mm from tip to tip and is clearly marked with the Swiss Cross and a small triangle. One of the edges is stamped with the serial number of another rifle, number 233771.
