Remington 1903-A3 U.S. Service Rifle……(F 835) SOLD
Created on April 16th 2014
WW 2 United States Army Service Rifle
Pictured above with “shortened” bayonet (NOT AVAIABLE). Serial number 4087924 puts production at Remington Arms Co as last quarter of 1943. 43.1/2″ in overall length. Barrel is 24″ long. Trigger pull is 13″. Stocked in the usual straight grained american black walnut with a plain full length hand guard. The stock has the later two screw type cross bolts beneath the action. Finish is original parkerizing mixed with some blued parts, which is correct for a non-arsenal rebuild. The following parts are blued, bolt, rear sight, magazine follower, one piece trigger guard and magazine floorplate. Also the magazine cut-of switch to the rear of the action and the checkered steel butt-plate. The action itself is of a parkerized green finish with nice high edge wear as is the exposed part of the barrel which is heavily worn. The whole rife has a worn look to the steel finishes which indicate a lack of interference from well meaning “repairers”.
The breech is marked “U.S. / REMINGTON / MODEL 03-A3 / 4087924.” On the LHS of the action is the Hatcher gas escape hole. The mixture of finishes mentioned above is absolutely correct for an original unmolested 03-A3; This rifle has not been refinished by the authorities in the US. Barrel marked just behind the front sight ramp; “R.A. / flaming bomb motif / 09-43″
All the external stock furniture is of the pressed steel construction with strong wear to the finish on the trigger guard and butt-plate – this indicates expected usage. The bore however is in very good to excellent condition. It has the later two groove rifling with a right hand twist, perfectly adequate for a combat rifle which is expected to be accurate up to 1000 yards. It can be surprising to learn that Some of the A4 Sniper variants have two grove barrels.
The stocks are in very good condition for a combat rifle with very few small dents or knocks to the surface. There is a good even shine all over and no splits or cracks. On the LHS of the wrist are clear cartouches which read “R.A.” – Remington Arms, and “FJA” Frank James Attwood the Chief Weapons Inspector at Remington at the time. Underneath the stock about the wrist is a single circled “P” which is the final proof mark to pass the rifle from the factory into service. Just in front of the trigger guard are four smaller marks which are the various factory inspectors marks, the stock picked up as it passed through the manufacturing process at the Remington plant.
Altogether, a fine example of an original World War Two American service rifle, ready to use on the range, chambered in .30-06 with a 5-shot integral mauser type action.
