U.S. 1903 Modified in A1 Stock…………..SOLD
Created on November 2nd 2012
An interesting 1903 U.S. Service Rifle mounted in an A1 Stock
An unusual combination of rifle and stock which may offer the best of both worlds. This rifle has been Retro-fitted with an inter war years A1 specification stock which has the pistol grip configuration. This is a chance for the shooter who prefers the location of the trigger hand set by the stock shape, something not usually available with the 03′ configuration of sights. Purists may disagree.
The breech is clearly marked “U.S. / REMINGTON / MODEL 1903 / 3337797” The serial number places production as December 1942, this corresponds with the barrel information found on top of the round barrel, behind the front sight which reads as “R.A. / flaming bomb / 12-42″ This indicates the barrel is the original fitment. This is made particularly pleasing by the very good condition of the four grove bore, which is free form pitting or frosting and has strong rifling.
The rifle is 43.1/2″ in overall length. The barrel is 24″ long. This is a standard 5 shot internal magazine, with Mauser type action. The caliber is .30-06. there is a complete absence of military parkerising with the finish being blued. The action may have been refinished at some stage as in some lights there is a distinct red hew in the blueing.
All fittings are correct for the 1903 “modified” as it was known where all the external parts are of milled steel. The “modified” refers to the dropping of some of the features of production from the early 03’s. Particularly noticeable is the lack of machining on the sight base whereby the lightening cuts have bee omitted. The stock carries the Springfield butt plate for the time, with fine sharp checkering and butt-trap for cleaning equipment. It is an early two cross bolt stock with letters stamped into the magazine cut-off switch let out in the stock. A clear capital “S” and an “O” are visible. Other components of the action and bolt assembly all clearly display Remington “R” inspection marks, as do the rear sights and indeed the front.
The stock and hand-guard are made in a very good piece of American Walnut which is almost 99% clear of any damage or dents, and has a very pleasing finish. There is a number stamped into the underside of the butt, just forward of the rear sling swivel which can not be related to a rifle serial number, either of the stock, or the action; it reads “D1836 “
A very attractive Remington 03 which no doubt will be a pleasure to shoot.
