U.S Springfield M1884 Trapdoor Carbine.
S/n 379554, 45-70 cal, 22″ round barrel with blue/casehardened finish as manufactured by the Springfield Armoury. These carbines were the main cavalry carbine from the post civil war era up through the late 1890’s and saw service through out the Indian wars until the adoption of the Krag. This late pattern weapon has the Buffington rear sight which is fully adjustable. The lock is the three click tumbler Springfield lock with the low arched breech block marked 1884. It has the two piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and the late style butt-plate with storage for cleaning rods etc. The rear of the barrel is correctly marked with the “V/P/eagles head” proof marks and the lock plate is correctly marked “US/SPRINGFIELD” next to the US Eagle. The stock shows the correct cartouches – “SWP/1887” and the circled “P” proof in the grip area.
CONDITION:Very good overall with traces of original blue finish remaining mostly in the protected areas the rest turning that pleasing grey brown patina. no signs of reworking anywhere. The top part of the barrel from the rear sight forward is thinning the most. The lock and hammer retain approximately a third of the faded blue finish the balance greying out. The breech block retains slightly less of the original finish. The stock is fine overall but shows many dents and scratches. There are two heavier pressure dents behind the sling bar in the area of the cartouch. The cartouch and the stock proofs are clear and the action is excellent the barrel is very good with strong clear rifling.
The 2007 British proof marks have been applied out of sight under the barrel.
