Excellent 18 Bore  Yeomanry Percussion Carbine

{A Small Note from me} – It constantly amazes me when I discover an item which seems to have escaped the “Ravages of Time”. When the condition of what you see before you does not seem to equate with its age. Yet, you know it is right. The date on the lock says “1847” but its’ condition would suggest it being no more than a few years old – not 161. Yes, there are scratches and dents in the wood work, but they are minimal. The lock has lost most of its colour,  the barrel has slight pitting within, and is plum grey on the outside. But, what stands out more clearly than any of these immediate observations, is, the sheer quality that remains about the item, and this eminates from the day it was made. Everything fits beautifully, and functions perfectly. Its purpose is as simple as the weapon is uncomplicated. And, although we are conscious of the high tech’ weaponry of today – produced on modern machinery, you know that this basic item would do its job in one terrible moment and without fail. Yet, it looks superb. Somehow, it retains the beauty of a sculpted work of art. A piece that you can study and appreciate for many years to come. And, you can only get to grips this fact, when you hold the thing in your own hands.

   

Round 20″ plain block sighted 18 bore barrel. Many inspectors, viewing and proof marks about the breech (6 in total). Full length stirrup steel ramrod beneath, marked “T & C G” with inspection marks.

Flat, dated, border engraved lock with the Crown over “V.R” over “TOWER”. Iron Saddle bar and ring, bar marked with “T&CG” and Crown over “B” and “2” inspectors mark. The stock is full length plain walnut terminating at the muzzle with a brass end cap. There is little damage at all on the stock with no splits or bad dents. The stock shows inspectors marks behind the trigger guard and the suppliers name “Sargent” under the butt, and the ownership marks of the Board of Ordnance “BO” under Arrow on the left side. Regulation brass with butt plate stamped “G” over “49” on the upper tang. Spur Trigger guard.

On the stock, behind the brass trigger guard and on the side of the saddle ring there are many minor dents in a specific pattern which indicate the kind of genuine wear associated with the damage caused by the repatative motion of use on horseback whilst stowed on a “bucket” or such like.  These do not detract in any way from the appearance of the carbine but enhance its authenticity, hinting at the use that it may have seen.
