An Extremely rare pair of Victorian 1845 pattern Infantry Officers Swords by Phillipps & Son, Circa 1864 -1870.
The swords which are presented in their original mahogany case are standard and piquet-weight etched blades. Each one decorated with foliage, the crowned royal cypher and the owners initials “A.H” with crested arms including three eagles displayed. The family motto underneath reads “Vive ut Vivas” They have regulation brass hilts with royal cypher, the piquet weight example still retaining its leather hand guard and bullion knot. The scabbards are both brass mounted and complete.
The mahogany case is a lined with flush fitting padded red velvet and shows signs of wear consumate with its age.
The blades are 32.1/4″ long and 30.3/4″ long.
The makers traded at George street, Hanover square, London from 1864 to 1870
Condition: The swords may have seen active service and probably travelled the world contained in their box. The blades show some signs on pitting in localised areas but are generally good with clear legible engraving. The case is in fine condition for its age with good brass fittings.
This Pair of 1845 Officers Sword are a rare and research-able piece of military history beautifully presented – as if by its original makers.
