TOWER Carbine marked 1867
A plain smoothbore percussion carbine with two bands. Single pies hardwood stock with straight grip. Overall this carbine is 40″ long. The re-browned round barrel is 24″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.7/8″ to centre. Bears the “25” civil proof mark for a black powder smooth-bore weapon on the LHS of the barrel back at the breech area.
Clear royal cypher at rear of lock and heavily worn “1867 / TOWER” in front of the hammer. This most likely denotes a privately raised weapon of the militia. Full length steel cleaning rod under barrel. Brass trigger guard and nose-cap on stock. Cartouch in the centre of the RHS of the butt-stock may read “ROBT’ HUGHES / MAKER / BIRMINGHAM”. There was a Robert Hughes practicing from 1855 until 1900 in Moland Street who adopted the name “Universal Fire Arms Works in 1868 and they specialised in military and export weapons. Its a fair chance this is one of theirs.
The lock shows signs on its front and face of heavy corrosion which has been cleaned away leaving an unusual “grain” effect to the steel. It has a vague resemblence to the Damascuss effect. The hammer is also thus affected. Two position lock. Stock clean and clear of any breakages or splits. Twin sling swivles. Brass unmarked butt-plate. A beginners or cheap and cheerful piece.
