Very Fine Sweedish Mauser by Oberndorf for 1900
For its actual age this Model 96 Gevar (Long Rifle) is in very good condition. Chambered in 6.5 x 55mm with a five shot internal magazine. This M96 was manufactured in the second full year of production actualy at Mauser before the Mauser machinery was fully set up at the CArl Gustafs plant. We can tell this by the serial number “42572” clearly marked on the outside of the action wall. Most other parts, certainly the important ones show the last three digits but this weapon has been back in for a full factory inspection, where some of the ancillaries have been changed.
Of standard specification with a stock made in Beech with forend finger grooves. It is very probable that this stock is a replacement, from its condition but also from the two crowns and crowned Gg mark. The Crowned “Gg” is known to denote Inspectors Inspection following reworking at A2 Tygstation, Goteborg. Sometimes this could even mean a replacement barrel. There is a debate that these Model 96 Gevar are the better example to collect because they were made by Mauser themselves. I see no compelling evidence that one is better than the other, but what is certainly true, is that those made by Mauser are more rare, as less were produced then by the other manufacturies.
The receiver ring is marked; “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNORF A/N / 1900” The outer side wall has inspectors initials “O.G.” (Olof D. Gibson – Chief Weapons Inspector) then the serial number. The action, barrel, sights trigger guard etc are all blacked whereas the bolt is finished in the white as normal with these weapons. The bolt release catch, all bolt components, rear sights carry the matching “572” numerals; other parts have mixed numbers. The brass circular bore condition disc is in position on the LHS of the butt stock and a trace of the range conversion tables can be seen adjacent to it.
In overall length the weapon is 49.1/2″ long. The round blued barrel with stepped muzzle for bayonet is 29″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.7/8″ to Centre. All the Crown inspection marks are the horizontal Carl Gustafs type. The action is typically smooth as expected of this type of rifle. Finish is starting to fade in areas of common contact, most noticeably the exposed portion of the barrel. Bore is dirty and would respond to cleaning and use. These rifle seldom suffer from accuracy problems – this M96 is going to be a pleasure to own and shoot.
It comes complete with the correct pattern all steel Sweedish bayonet, scabbard and leather frog. The bayonet being profusely marked, the cross bar showing various Crown Inspection marks and on one side; “E.J. crown/anchor A.B.” The numerals “057” on blade and crossbar. Also some unit markings; “11./I 23. No 158” Further research could be carried out but from a quick look around it could be the The Jämtland Ranger Corps (Swedish: Jämtlands fältjägarkår, JFK), is a Swedish Army infantry unit that operated in various forms during the years 1670–1983, 1990–1997, 2000–2005 and 2021–present. The unit was and is located in Östersund Garrison in Östersund.(Wikapedia) The blade shows some use and finish is worn with brighter high points. The leatherwork is typical with some repair straps but all is complete and reassuring verdigris is gaining a hold on some brass parts.
A fine classic and historic rifle bearing BNP proofs which is currently 124 years old but just waiting its next keeper and more time on the range. Remember, because of the reduced recoil you can shoot these all day without gaining a sore shoulder. Also, a good solution for the Ladies for the same reason. Some of the accuracy reports I am getting back are remarkable – even at 1100 yards !
