A good example of a converted Officers Pistol by Lowe
For anybody who is interested in collecting because of their fascination with the development side of firearms, this would be a perfect addition to a collection. This fine Officers pistol began its service as a Private purchace Flintlock. It has later been updated, for reasons of reliability as technilogical advancement which allowed for more reliability. It has “reached” the stage of a Breech Drum Conversion, one of the pre-runners to full Persussion. However the work has been carried out to a high standard and one can only assume from this that “Lowe” were a quality Gunsmith.
Reference to “Lowe” in the Birmingham Gun Trade s sparse and details two names; Richard Lowe (1855) Bullock’s Mill and Edward (1861) of 39.1/2 Whittall Street. This does link up with the Birmingham proofs on the underside of the barrel.
The pistol is 15″ long overall, with a flat topped round browned Damascuss twist 9″ barrel of 16 bore. The barrel is sighted and has “CHESTER” hand engraved along the top. Fine flat stepped lock with safety bolt system all engraved with scrolls trophies and the makers name “LOWE”. The pistol is fully stocked with a black horne fore end cap. The butt being finely chequered with a flare to the base of the grip, inset beneath with a fine sunburst design. There is a vacant silver escutcheon behind the breech. Beautiful tiger stripped Walnut stock selected for just such a job. Steel mounts including engraved blued trigger guard and well executed pineaplle finial. Excellent condition steel stirrup swivel ram-rod – all in fine condition.
