Spanish Mauser Model 1916

A rifle that was naturally heavily influenced by the German K98 due to the close political ties between Spain and Germany pre’ WW 2.  This is known as the Spanish Model 1916 Short Rifle.   Overall the rifle measures 41.1/8″ in length.  The round blued barrel is 21.3/4″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.3/8″ to centre. The 1916 has a five round staggered internal magazine with a full indent in the LH action wall to facilitate loading from a stripper clip.  This example has been re-chambered to 7.62 x 51mmm (NATO round)

This 1916 Short Rifle is an early version with the Lange Vizier type sights graduated to 2000 meters.  It also has the turned down bolt handle which matches the serial number on the action “Z 3841”  Other number components include the trigger guard and magazine floor plate.  The main serial number is stamped onto the outside of the action wall where the “K98” is usually placed on the German rifle.  The bolt and the receiver ring have extra gas escape holes added.  RHS outside of the receiver ring is marked “11908” – meaning unknown.

The bolt release is in the normal Mauser position.  The receiver is clearly marked with the emblem of the “Falangists” who allied themselves with Franco and the Fascists.  Single stock cross-bolt and steel butt-plate.  The rear sling mount is a bar let into the LHS of the butt-stock which compliments a side mounted sling mount on the mid-band.  Straight wrist, walnut stock with a half length handguard around the rear sights.  The ramp is also graduated on the outside.

Exposed section of the barrel is stepped.  The forend nose-cap has a fixing point for a bayonet and a cleaning rod is stored under the barrel.  The fore-sight is guarded by steel ears.  The bolt is finished in the white, the balance of the rifle is blued.  Three position flag safety to rear. Main screws with locking screw retain the trigger guard.  The stock is plain – not stained or varnished and in very good condition with very few markings.  The bore is very good with sharp rifling and is very clean.  The calibre was probably changed with the coming of the FR-8 rifles.

An unusual rifle from a bitter conflict ready to fill another space in a collection or another position on the firing point. CIP proofed.
