Surrendered Chilean M1895 Mauser

Superbly built, constructed and finished Mauser rifle from the era when Mauser were really at their peak of perfection in the product they were turning out.  Chambered in 7 x 57mm with a five shot internal magazine which could be stripper clip fed.  Straight arm bolt with flag safety to rear.  Straight wrist, single piece stock with half-length hand-guard over barrel. Chilean crest on round receiver – clear and legible – very fine.  The majority of the rifle carries the serial number “307” the bolt is “F 929,” this is a clear indication to surrender procedure; where bolts are separated from rifles in the field – the question has to be where and when ?

Full length rifle measuring 48.1/2″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is 29″ long with a stepped muzzle to accept the 1895 bayonet.  Trigger Pull is 13.1/8″ to centre.  Action barrel and furniture are all blued, the action and barrel being the strongest but original.  The curved steel butt-plate has lost most of its colour.  Twin sling swivels on underside of rifle the forward on the mid-band. Serial number stamped into LHS of stock below receiver- matching.  Fine but slightly illegible tock cartouche on RHS of butt-stock is the Chilean acceptance mark.

As mentioned above the Chilean National Crest is clearly marked on the round receiver.  On the LHS just above the stock line is the serial number “307”.  The outer wall has the makers details as follows; “DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN. / BERLIN”.  The bolt release sits next to those markings and is showing strong nitra-blue finish.  The bolt is finished in the white with all components carrying the “F 929” number or parts of it.  Triger guard and floor-plate matching and blued.  Bands retained by blued springs under.  The front fore-end cap has a bayonet lug on the underside.  Short cleaning rod with “307” stamped into it requires buddying-up with another rifleman to produce a cleaning rod long enough to clear the barrel.  Magazine follower also sports a fine nitra-blue finish.  All parts carry inspection or acceptance marks peculiar to this specific model of Mauser.  These specific marks are not seen on Imperial German Mausers – pointing to originality once again.

Rear sights ladder type with open “U-notch” aim point sights lay flat up to 500 meters then by graduations on the ladder face from 500 to 2000 meters.  This rifle is a true survivor, mechanically good – on par with the finish and quality of the Swedish Mauser.  Bolt face clean.  Action smooth and positive.  Very clean uninterrupted 4-groove right-hand twist rifling.  No pitting or misting – bright and well defined.  An interesting period to think about from a top line manufacturer.  As German World War Mausers become more and more inflated in price, this genre of rifle starts to offer a less expensive way to experience Mauser at his best.  This is, for a military rifle – a thing of beauty.
