3 Band Snider-Enfield Mk II**…………….SOLD
Created on October 11th 2010
A .577 British Snider Enfield MkII** Three Band Service Rifle
Nicely fitted flat lock marked with Crown over “V.R.” and “ENFIELD” over “1864” with other proof/inspectors marks. All clear and easliy readable with a matt grey finish to the lock face. Plumb grey hammer also inspected at rear. With chain and nipple protector. Felt AF.
Fine full length walnut stock with no bad damage only handling and usage marks as to be expected. The stock is clearly marked on the right side with a stamped roundle reading “R.crown.M.” over “ENFIELD” with “E/Crown/21” in the center, the whole over a figure “1”. On the left side of the stock within a diamond shape are the letters”D.C.” which denotes Dominion of Canada. The brass butt-plate tang is stamped with gun number “267”. Also, behind the brass trigger guard tang, on the underside of the stock, there are more inspector and view marks . The brass trigger guard carries the rear sling swivle marked, the trigger guard being inspector marked. Nipple protector chain attached. Forward sling swivle fitted to front barrel band.
The round 33.1/4″ barrel shows little pitting and is turning to a nice plumb brown pattina, losing most colour at the muzzle. Plain fore sight, rear sight marked to 950yds. The bore is fine to almost perfect with the lightest misting but clear shallow rifling. Three iron barrel bands all with inspectors marks and iron cleaning rod which correctly screws into keeper in the stock and is stamped with the numbers “357”..
The breech shows the most corrosion but retains its inspector, proof and identification marks which are clearly stamped on the breech over each other; “II / * / *” and “L.S.A.C.” The action locks up and releases correctly as does the cartidge rim lifter. On the inside of the breech block along with an enfield inspectors mark are the initials “T.W”.
Unusually, during cleaning, the lock was removed from the rifle to expose a wealth of crowned Enfield inspectors marks which are quite impressive. The working parts of the lock are in fine condition and good working order.
A good MkII** which would be a pleasure to own and shoot.
£1175.
