K98k Kriegsmodel “bcd /45” Rifle…………(F 940) SOLD
Created on August 4th 2021
A fine example of the late war K98k Kriegsmodel rifle
Of standard late war specifications. Chambered in 8mm Mauser with a five shot internal magazine. Mauser bolt system with flag safety. Late war laminated stock with cupped butt-plate (stripping hole inc’) Stock fittings of the late pressed steel and welded construction. Pressed trigger guard and floor plate, correctly un-numbered but with keeper screw holes still and “byf” manufacturers code as sub-contracted in.
The receiver is marked with a waffenamt at the top (number indiscernible) The manufacturers code of “bcd” for Gustloff Werke, Weimar. And the date simply recorded as “45.” Model designation on sidewall of action; “Mod.98” The serial number is marked on the barrel; “13656” adjacent to a clear Nazi waffenamt. The barrel makers code is only partially visible; “Cr”. The end of the correct serial number is repeated on the bolt arm stub as “3656”. The same on the shroud – marked “ghn”. The last two digits on the flag safety “56” and the rear of the cocking piece. The barrel and the action are finished in a mild phosphate grey and the bolt similar to clean metal. What is interesting about this rifle amongst other things is the fact that the turning marks from the lathe are evident in many places, but most notably along the barrel. This was all part of the Kriegsmodel idea that unnecessary machining operations would be omitted in the race to get rifles made for the war effort. Also the early experiments with phosphating as a finish are also starting to show.
It is also entirely correct that a rifle such as this will have mixed finish components on it as blueing was the standard in many other plants. The trigger assembly and magazine. The butt-plate, barrel bands and sight hood are all blued. The laminated stock is in excellent condition and does bring the possibility to the fore that this rifle may never have been issued, as it shows few if any signs of an army life. Couple that with the excellent condition of the bore and that becomes a stronger eventuality. The previous owner has not shot this rifle as it was held as part of a serious Mauser collection.
Standard rear sights (correctly not numbered) graduated from 100 to 2000 meters. The rifle is equipped with a bayonet fitting bar and beneath that the hole for the cleaning rod, but, interestingly enough the stock/fore end has not been drilled for such a thing. The usual band spring is in position but there is also a drilling for a fixing screw in the sling band. In the later rifles they only used standard wood screw to secure the bands. This was obviously on the card when this rifle was assembled. The butt has the usual German slot and cut-way for the standard leather sling and a vacant screw hole (possibly for a sling button as with the training rifles?)
An excellent matching late war production Kriegsmodel K98k worthy of a place in a museum or just as much on the firing point. That will be up to the new custodian. Proofed 2021. Matching Ks’ are rare things these days and their value is rocketing.
