Good clean example of the highly accurate Model 1911 Schmidt-Rubin Rifle
A good model 1911 Schmidt-Rubin Infantry rifle chambered in the 7.5 x 55mm Swiss cartridge. The rifle is equipped with a 6-round detachable box magazine with matching serial number. Rifles serial number is 241552 this is repeated on the action, the barrel and the magazine, also on the inside where during strip-down it was found in the barrel channel. This is the last of the long infantry rifles fielded by the Swiss, the K31 followed after some K11 carbines were converted for use.
This rifle has the long bolt with the locking lugs situated approximately in the middle of the 10.1/2″ bolt. Red Bakelite bolt handle with the rotating sleeve which rotates around the bolt body. The matching serial number is repeated on the forward section of the bolt which is exposed when the bolt is closed. Bolt body finished in the white. The balance of the rifle is completely blued apart from the graduated face of the rear sight.
The rifle measures 51.1/2″ in overall length. The round blued barrel is 30.1/2″ long and the trigger Pull measured to centre is 13.3/8″ All original finish – no refinishing noted. The finish is thinning of high spots and points of regular contact, on the base of the magazine and around the muzzle. However there is no rust or pitting present. Attached to the front sling swivel is a number tag indicating this has been part of a collection until recently.
All components are marked with Swiss military acceptance marks in the form of neat Swiss crosses. The most obvious instance of the serial number is on the LHS of the receiver and barrel. The action has the three dished grooves in it. The tangent rear sight is graduated from300 to 2000 meters in 100-meter increments. No windage to rear sight. Fixed front sight mounted on a block – windage would have been set by qualified armourers. The front band includes a stacking hook and a bayonet lug.
Clean bore with four groove RH twist rifling. No pitting or corrosion with strong rifling and clean grooves. (from personal experience, may I relate a yarn) One early morning on a range I was shooting my own example of these fine old rifles. I became convinced the markers at 400 yards were not marking my target, as the dayglow orange dot was not moving when the target went down and re-emerged! So I got hold of the radio and in my most polite Anglo-Saxon asked them to wake up and mark my target…! They replied that they had been ! All the last twelve rounds had been bulls ! In fact I had even hit the marker at least three times! I was astounded and grovelled my apologies; it hadn’t occurred to me that from my fox-hole just hand held with open sights I would be able to pull off such results! These are very accurate and I know that the present vouge is the K31 but these will easily give its successor a run for their money.
It is my personal opinion that these M1911 long rifles are just as good as the K31. A piece of precision Swiss engineering from another era which does exactly what it was designed to do all those years ago, without failing for a moment. A classic historic collectible with fresh London proof marks so it can continue for another 100 years plus.
