Training Rifle by F.W.Heym
This neat Heym Training rifle smacks of high quality German craftsmanship. Privately built rifles produced in Germany really were of the highest quality even if destined for military training or the youth market. This rifle one oozes quality. The selection of the timber used for its figure and straight grain matched with the high quality of the finish, in both the white components and the blued, is difficult to ignore. This is the civilian version of a rifle produced for the Police and other such bodies.
Single shot bolt action in .22LR. The rifle is 41.5/8″ long. The round blued barrel is 23.5/8″ long (600mm) and the trigger pull is 14″ to centre. Simple plain one piece walnut stock with rounded pistol grip. There is however, a subtle K98 type feature which has crept in to the stock design; it incorporates a side mounted sling bar at the front. This leads to the necessity of the same to the rear, and this is where the familiar stock grove and longitudinal sling slot sneaks in. Blued steel butt-plate and steel trigger guard. Another “K-type” feature is the dummy steel cleaning rod stored under the barrel at the tip of the stock. Serial Number 4399.
Note on condition of stock: Of some minor annoyance are two distinct round dents into the stock just under and adjacent to the action. They resemble what might occur if a round steel bolt were knocked into the stock surface causing a break in the timber fibres. They could be attended to with some degree of success, but that would take time and cost money and that’s up to the new owner.
The front sight is on a ramp with hood. Rear sights are flip-up leaves graduated to different distances. Slightly curved bolt handle. Bolt release to LHS of action along with Safety catch to rear, with red and white dot to indicate “ready” and “safe”. The receiver is marked; “F.W.HEYM” in an arch. There are clear “BUG” proofs but the rifle has also been re-proofed for the British market. The bolt mechanism is smooth to operate and the bore is in excellent condition. There are two annoying perfectly round dents to the surface of the timber which are the only notable detraction from the rifles overall condition – a small price to pay in damage for a long life.
A fine collectible Trainer worthy of any serious rifle collection but, equally able to be used and put through its paces.
