A good Mauser Gew 98 Bolt Action Rifle with Vintage Scope
Standard Specification Military Bolt Action Mauser chambered in 7.92mm with internal 5-shot magazine. Full length infantry rifle with the early “Lange-Viser” back sights graduated from 400 to 2000 meters with a V-notch. High quality full length European Walnut stocks. Semi-pistol grip stock with steel unit disc (blank) on RHS of butt. Serial number “2324 m” on LHS of receiver, repeated on barrel between rear sight and receiver. The model designation “Gew 98” in fine gothic text marked on LHS of action wall. Adjacent to that marking, and next to the sprung bolt release catch, is the indentation in the action wall which allows the process of fully pushing in a 5-shot clip of rounds when loading the weapon. Mixed numbered bolt from later Wehrmacht rifle. Both sides of the receiver ring display imperial acceptance marks but the main makers mark is covered by the front sight base, but it is likely to be the DWM marking, the date could be 1925, 16 or 18 – difficult to tell! The crest of the barrel behind the sight is marked for the S-Patronen round.
It has to be said from the start that this set-up is not genuine WW1 Sniper configuration but the the rifle is for the most part of that period and the scope is an older fine Henzholt model mated by a later swivel-on mounting system. However, it is a vintage scope which is typically fine with good optical quality. The scope has a three point reticule. If shooting a World War One period rifle is what you want and your eyes are starting to fail you then this is a very good solution. The rifle is equipped with a genuine, period leather sling with the marked detachable rear swivel and adjuster. It also has a steel cleaning rod stowed through the bayonet fitment under the front band.
The general patina over the metal work is a pleasing grey and the stock has a high finish with few, if any, spots of damage to its glossy surface. The bolt (not matching ) is from a Nazi period rifle, having a bent handle which has been ground to allow free movement past the scope. The scope as mentioned before is post war, but with very clear optics and Four times magnification. The magazine floor-plate and trigger guard match the rifle and there are locking screws in position. Inverted “V” front sight on ramp with cross-hatched rear slope to avoid glare. There are many fine Imperial German Acceptance marks impressed into the stock.
The bore and chamber are in very good condition and has just been freshly reproofed at Birmingham. In good condition these rifles are fast becoming a difficult thing to find – this would be a good option for a keen shooter.
