Swedish Carl Gustaf Rolling Block Infantry Rifle Model 1867….SOLD
Created on July 9th 2020
A Good example of the Model 1867 Swedish Rolling Block in its early specification.
This rifle is in the unaltered 12.17 x 44mm (Centre-fire) black powder calibre and original specification with sword bayonet lug on the RHS of the muzzle. This is a hint that this rifle was ordered by the Swedish Navy or Cavalry, it’s overall length indicates that the Navy is the stronger possibility. It also comes with the correct full length cleaning rod. The rifle is serial numbered “16660”, this appears clearly on the LHS of the action the barrel and the two components of the stock, the butt and the for-end. It also on the top of the steel butt-plate. This is the Swedish built Carl Gustafs model without the single locking plate on the LHS of the action.
Other clear indicators to the rifles lineage are the C.G. markings. There is a clear Crowned “C” on the RHS of the action over the Swedish Crown, which is, in turn, over the date of manufacture; “1873”. The breech end of the barrel has similar marks showing with additional inspectors initials marked either side. Inspectors initials are clearest over the serial number on the action; “H.H. R.S.”
The stock is a highly attractive Artic Birch with a strong marbled wave running through it. The barrel is secured to the stock by three barrel bands, the centre band carries the forward sling swivel. The rear sling mounting point is on the front of the trigger guard. The rifle comes with a reproduction high quality brown leather sling in the original pattern. The rear sight has been remarked at some stage, the previous range markings on the side of the ramp have been struck out, with new ranges stamped in below. The ladder is graduated from 300 to 750. Action mechanically fine.
The rifle measures 53.1/4″ in overall length. The round barrel is of 37.3/8″ in length. The trigger “pull” is 14″ to centre. Interestingly, the bore when viewed from the muzzle end, looks strongly like it has hexagonal rifling. The bore is strong and still has a lot of life left in it. Overall the rifle has lost most of its original finish although the barrel itself is starting to exhibit a good degree of plumb brown. The stock is in fine condition with only the most minor of bumps and no significant dents are scratches. At some point in the weapons long and interesting history somebody has applied an old coin the the LHS of the butt-stock. It bears the simple marking of “OLAV V.R.”
A fine collectors piece in very early form, with a Whitworth-type rifling.
