Mausers’ Commemorative Gew 98
Not much to say about this really. A certain number of them were produced. Mauser made a splendid job of recreating their famous G98 and this is the end result. Perfect in almost every way. The receiver is marked slightly differently to the originals but all the same this is a perfect and beautifully produced reproduction. Virtually identical in all aspects it is hard to believe that they sent troops out into a war zone with such a splendid rifle! I wouldn’t want to get mine dirty or damage the wonderful walnut stock!
Standard Mauser bolt action rifle with straight arm turn bolt action. Chambered in 8mm Mauser with a five shot internal magazine. Flag safety to rear of bolt. Serial number: 19980960 marked on LHS of receiver and first stage of barrel. Action and bolt finished in the white, barrel and other furniture in blued finish. Quality and finish are exceptional. Action is superbly smooth to operate and mechanically fine. Overall the rifle measures a full 49″ in length. The round blued barrel is 29.1/2″ long and the trigger pull measures 13″ to centre.
The bright receiver is handsomely marked as follows; ” MAUSER – WERKE / OBERNDORF A/N / 1898 -1998″ On the LHS of the receiver is the German CIP proof mark. The outer wall of the action is marked “Gew. 98” in superb gothic script. All the usual component parts carry the serial number or at least a portion of it and everything matches.
The finish is excellent and the markings are picked out by being blued against the silver white of the action. The contoured steel butt-plate is secured by two beautifully case hardened screw. The rifle has been built with the classic early Lang-Visseure rear sights. The superb walnut stock has the “H” shaped front band with stacking hook. A cleaning rod and the “H”-shaped bayonet finish off the front end of the rifle. Steel dick in the side of the butt-stock is blank. On the underside of the same is the correct fitting for the rear sling mount.
The stock is immaculate and devoid of damage or wear. The rifle its elf looks unused, there is very little evidence of firing and no high edge wear. The bore is in very good condition, not having had 100 years to corrode. The previous owner had contacts in the USA who were able to source the correct reproduction bayonet which attaches to the rifle perfectly. However, there is a problem with the fit of the blade into the scabbard; it is very difficult to sheath, and once pushed in then it takes a mighty effort to remove it – so fettling is required. Otherwise it makes a handsome addition to the kit.
A major opportunity to recreate that feeling of a freshly issued rifle.
