A Fine Wehrmacht K98 G.I. Bring-back with a New Lothar-Walther Barrel

This K98 is in stunning condition if you appreciate the stages it has been through in its life. Couple that with the varying quality of care it will have been afforded through the years and it has remained in remarkably good condition.  This K98 seems to comply with the usual understanding of a surrendered rifle.  All parts of the rifle match with the serial number “557 f” but, the bolt shows an entirely different number.  This is normal where the rifles are separated from their bolts as the German troops were disarmed.  Rifles in one pile, bolts in another.  Never the twain to meet ……

Of standard manufacturers specification for a K98 Mauser at this stage in the war.   Normal carbine length of 43.1/2″.  The round (stepped) blued barrel measures 24″.  A trigger Pull  length of 13″ to center.  Smoothly finished laminated stock with cupped steel butt-plate marked with matching number and manufacturers code of “brg/41” sub-contractor.  Steel bolt strip-down disc mounted transversely through butt-stock.  Adjacent is the elongated rectangular slot and relief cut for the military leather sling. On the RHS of the butt it is possible to see the three standard cartouches, of which the immediately obvious one is the “H” for Army.  The other two are the correct waffenamts with Eagle and spread wings.

The stock is furnished with the correct steel furniture, all showing a high degree of blued finish and the correct “557 f” serial number.  The two main action securing screw heads both carry the “57” of the serial number.  Locking screws are present.  Correct “H-shaped” fore-band and nose-cap which includes the bayonet fitting.  Detachable magazine floor-plate.  The fore-sight mounting block shows the groves for the sprung front sight cover (a/f) as is the cleaning rod.  The underside of the butt-stock has the serial number clearly stamped into the wood-work.

As mentioned above, the bolt has a different number; “4827 q” on the stub and a mismatched safety and cocking piece. Bluing on all components is very strong.  The receiver is marked with the manufacturers code of ” bcd / 41 ” This was the Gustloff Werke, Weimar.  41 the year of manufacture.  The receiver is marked with all the correct waffenamts .  The barrel carries further information to its production, these have been “lifted” in the process of fitting a brand new Lothar-Walther barrel to retain the feeling of originality. The markings show the date of production which once again is 1941 but a code of “bys” for Ruhrstahl of Witten.  It also bears the matching serial number repeated on the receiver of “557 f” along with two fine, clear Eagle over Swastika markings.

Rear sights graduated from 1 to 20 with mismatched numbers.  The stock is in excellent condition with a high polish finish.  The bore is brand new and even may require the care of shooting in.  How can you miss!  A superb example of an iconic rifle in good conditions and ready for its next 78 years of service, but hopefully a less violent one.
