1903-A3 Smith-Corona in .30-06

A good reperesentative example of an 03-A3 by the type writer company Smith-Corona. Made in much simpler for than the original 1903s these rifles were produced as a war expediant. Cost cutting was the issue this weapon addressed, but in many peoples eyes this weapon is just as shootable and easily effective as its predecessor. The stock was simplified, the sights were redesinged and an appature sight place on the rear of the receiver. Many of the fittings were pressed out instead of being milled from soild steel. The result is a workman-like piece of kit which definately does the job.

This example has the following on the receiver “US/ SMITH-CORONA/MODEL 03-A3/ 4804717” The serial number corresponds with records which indicate the weapon was produced in September/October 1943. This is further backed up by the barrel markings just behind the fore-sight which are as follows, indicating the rifle still has its original barrel; “S.C./ flaming bomb / 10-43” The bore could only be described as excellent with four grove rifling.

The stock is crude by normal 1903 standards, but not rough. It is complete with no losses, some minor dents and scratches. It is the correct Smith-Corona type with rounded recesses for the band springs. It also shows nice clear cartouches with a clear “P” final proof inspection stamp behind the pressed trigger guard and 4 sub-inspectors marks infront of the base plate. On the wrist is a clear “F.J.A.” inspectors mark and the crossed  cannons ordenance mark.  On the left hand side on the butt, running parrallel to the butt plate there are some numbers clearly stamped into the stock “APA-190-4” – further research required!

A good shootable rifle.
