A very Good complete Arisaka Type 99 Short Rifle
This Type 99 Short Rifle still has all the accessories that these rifles often lose through the passage of time and its in great condition. First of all and immediately noticeable is the very good condition of the woodwork. The stocks on these rifles often suffer quite badly from the rigours of battlefield use. They are usually encountered with heavy scratching and denting adorning all the accessible areas. This one is quite the opposite and in very good condition. This well built Mauser type rifle is chambered in 7.7mm x 58mm and has a 5-shot internal magazine. The straight arm bolt is capped off by a circular end-cap which acts as the safety, the cap is intricately decorated by spiralling machine decorations. Apart form their obviously attractive appearance this acts as something for the open palm of the hand to gain purchase upon when being operated in adverse conditions. The indicator as to which position the bolt is in is a distinct depression which when at the twelve-o’clock position is at safe. The bolt cocks on closing and matches the action in that the bolt stub is marked “353” on the underside.
Overall the rifle measures 44.1/8″. The round blued barrel is approximately 25.3/4″ long. The trigger pull length is 13″. The stock is the two part dovetailed type with a steel cupped butt-plate. It also has the 6.1/2″ finger grooves on either side of the fore-end. The hand-guard over the barrel is one piece. The stock has the conventional cross-bolt reinforcement and two drain holes one on the RHS one underneath. The receiver is marked with a clear Imperial Chrysanthemum which is untouched. The Japanese characters the translate as “Type 99” run horizontally across the receiver ring and a single gas escape hole is between the two. On the LHS of the action are more important markings. Reading Left to Right the following are visible; “Series mark for 31st / 3353 / Kokura Army Arsenal mark / Tokyo Juki Kogyo 7 / final inspection mark.” (please remember, I am no expert on these symbols and will take any guidance that might come my way)
The rifle is equipped with two side mounted sling swivels and a full length cleaning rod stored under the barrel within the fore-end. Magazine floor plate release catch is towards the front of the trigger guard. Finish on floor-plate very good. The action still retains the sliding bolt cover which is not numbered but in very good condition. At the mid-band the monopod remains fitted. The rear sights still include the folding anti-aircraft sights. These fold out at 90 degrees and are supposed to provide the soldier with the correct amount of lead in taking on an aircraft. The sights are of the aperture variety in both positions and are graduated from 3 to 15. They are fully functionable and in good clean order.
The rifle in general is in very good condition, the best I have experienced in 10 years. It has been totally stripped, cleaned and sent to proof. It is in really fine order. The bore is chrome lined and is excellent condition. A high condition very collectible interesting military rifle. The blueing is all original and in fine condition with only slight thinning in some areas and high points. The stock bears the high quality original laquer finish and is almost devoid of damage.
