A Good example of a 1903 US Service 1903

The debate we often face is;whether to go for a shootable example of an item OR a collectible example – that we are too affraid to shoot. This grade of rifle lands us right in the middle and answers both requirements. In short it does both. At first glance it looks like a good example of a WW1 spec 1903, – slim stock, physically small, long range sight grauated up to 2800yds. The only difference between this and a highly sort after collectible is that the US army replaced the barrel in November 1942, making it a highly shootable item with a great 4 groove bore.

This 1903 carries all the characteristics of a WW1 Springfield. The serial number 1231526 indicates its manufacture date as 1922. In standard .30-06 caliber. It has the twin bolt stock, with finger grooves in the fore end. Correct milled furniture, two sling swivles. On the bolt flat there are the letters “W  L” over “3” Much of the bolt has droped back to a silvered effect. The action, safety and cocking piece have much of the re-parkerised finish remaining as with the barrel which is marked “S.A. / ordenance bomb and 11-42”. The rear sight also is adjustable for windage.

The stock is in good overall condition with a geneally pleasing patina with a small amount of scuffing and denting applicable to its age. It is though in well above average condition for it age. There is a clearly visable “R” in the magazine selector cutt-out and a boxed “D.A.L” cartouche behind.  There is a clear final firing “P” behind the trigger guard. The rifle is London Proofed.
