French Military Trench Knife 1916……………..SOLD

A Rare & Unusual Fighting Knife designed for Close Quarter Fighting in WW1

To meet a large demand for trench knives the government sanctioned the building of these knives.  Some were produced by larger manufacturers some by the smaller cutlers.  They were principally produced from salvaged bayonets held in store.  Some were cruciform some double edged flat blades as this example.  This example was produced by ” Cheron et Vogt / Chatelleraut” as marked on the flat of the blade. This is probably a salvage Label bayonet.  Double edged blade is 5.7/8″ long and nearly 3/4″ wide at the cross guard.  Simple oval cross guard marked with a circled C.V. on the blade side.

There is a full tang which emerges at the top of the simple wooden grip.  The grip is 4.3/4″ in length, giving a total length of approximately 10.1/2″.  The tip of the blade is intact.  This knife has retained the original leather scabbard it was designed to be held in.  Stitched construction with a large belt hook.  The rear being centrally marked with the initial “R.J.” Possibly the maker or owner.  Fastening strap A/F.
