USMC 18″ Machete WW II…….SOLD
Created on February 10th 2017
WWII Period USMC 18″ Machete & leather scabbard
Excellent condition – No corrosion. Composite grips with four steel rivets. The blade is a nominal 18″ long, the grip another 5.1/4″ The grey steel blade is 1/8″ thick and a maximum of 2.1/4″ wide at the most.
The machete is perfectly balanced and the marines were taught fighting techniques with this as well as instruction in the obvious uses. The blade portion is perfectly machine milled, showing the machine marks.
The flat portion of the blade is plain on one side and clearly marked with nearly 1/4″ tall lettering on the other. It reads as follows: “U.S.M.C. / MK 2. /1944 / S.W.1” The last line is the abbreviation for the manufacturing company. The edge is still keen and displays only the mildest surface discolouration. (Possibly not issued?) No indications of sharpening in the field.
Leather scabbard: Overall length 21″ including belt hanger. Mellow rich brown leather construction with stitching and brass rivets. Markings on the front face not easy to read, possibly “C. _ 1944 / C^6.42”
The whole in very fine condition; A rare thing on this side of the pond!
