WW II USMC Hospital Corps Bolo Knife & Scabbard
Of standard specification and construction. Full tang construction with riveted hardwood grips.
Overall length 16.1/2″. Bright steel blade 11.1/4″ exposed marked on one side;- “U.S.M.C. / BRIDDELL” Round nosed profile to blade. The blade in apparently unused condition with Verdigris from the scabbard on the surface which easily comes off. The weight of the blade give a strong hint to its original purpose as it 1/4″ in thickness. These knives were designed not as a weapon, but more as a tool used for cutting splints and tent pegs etc.
Scabbard: Heavy leather construction. Strong uninterrupted stitching and brass rivets. The mouth is also brass and this appears to be the source of the Verdigris on the blade surface. Combat belt hanger stitched to rear side of the scabbard. Scabbard 12.1/4″ x 3.5/8″ Marked on the rear;- 2USMC / BOYT / 44″
