Early Russian Sniper with PE Scope side rail mount and sling
Here is a good representitive example of Russian Sniper rifle. But I have every suspicion that it is not a genuine example. However, “Horses for Courses” and all that! There are many genuine parts which have been cleverly assembled to produce the illusion of the real thing, ( and not in the Eastern Block!) so you have been warned! I will describe what is this that lies before me ..
Rifle dated 1942. Rare laminated stock with finger grooves in fore-end. Scope dated 1939. Mosin-Nagant rifle chambered in 7.62 with five-shot internal magazine. Rifles serial number is HE600. Bolt matches receiver, as does magazine base and butt-plate. Bolt arms looks to have been “worked” into current format with a all-round weld at base of arm.
The round breech which retains good colour is marked as follows; “Large Soviet Star with Arrow up the centre/ 1942 /N/HE600″ There is a large dovetail plate attached to the LHS outer action wall. The stock is relieved to accept the plate and is also reduced behind the fitment, in depth, to allow the sliding on and off of the side bracket. There is a single but sturdy stop pin protruding at the front of the dovetail to stop forward movement. The plate has a red hue to its colour which is repeated on the rest of the mounting components, very reminiscent of the re-worked Russian captured. K98s which have retained some finish.
The scope its self is in good condition and is original with most excellent optics. It has a post and rail reticule, apparently undamaged. Free adjustment in all directions. A windage and elevation turret with countersunk, domed slotted screws. On the obverse sides of the turret assembly are two inspection plates retained by three flat-headed slotted screws which have all been pin-stamped into position and not disturbed. The saddle is marked on one bevelled edge with “No 6-32966” and on another bevel; “1939.” The long side rail mount has the facility of coarse adjustment for zeroing with a brass scale plate to aid zeroing on the rear face. The eye-piece is marked with a hammer and cycle. It is believed that this mount is one of the high quality “Drimtri ” reproductions originating from the USA but built in Russia, that in its self is a very valuable component, worth something in excess of £600. alone.
Wide canvass strap with leather loops through slots in the woodwork. Graduated rear ramp sight to 200 yards with protected front adjustable sight within a hood. Full length cleaning and clearing rod stored under front end of stock. Good strong bore and rifling, needs cleaning by use.
