A Good Finnish Nagant M39 Rifle
This rifle is basically an improved Nagant. Standard Mosin-Nagant bolt and action chambered in 7.62R.
Serial number 56263 on breech and action. 47″ in overall length. Round blued barrel 26.3/4″ long. Replacement stock is of a noticeably more dense timber and subsequently heavier. The stock has a high grade protective finish all over. The fore end is finger-jointed just in-front of the grasping grooves. This has been done extremely well, by machine, obviously an in factory job. The main idea behind the finger-jointing was to prevent the stocks warping under the extreme conditions experienced in Finland. It also enables shorter blanks to be used in the production process, therefore keeping costs down. The weighty stock gives the marksman a more steady base and helps improve accuracy.
Markings on the breech are as follows: “SA” – the Finnish marking. / “VKT” for the Tikka factory. “D”( indicates the chamber has been “throated” for the heavier 200 grain bullet) / 56263 / 1942″ Plus other modern proof marks and caliber markings. The “hotter” the load with these rifles the better their performance. The hexagonal breech repeats the serial number. The white straight handled bolt is numbered to another rifle – “2219”.
The rear sights have been replaced with another unit and are graduated to 1000 meters when down and 2000 meters when upright. Clear range markings are visible on the LHS of the base. The blade fore-sight is protected by two upright “ears” and is adjustable by screws on the outside of the assembly. Turns of the screw are graduated around the screw head on the LHS.
The bayonet fitting and nose cap are hinged with a hole for the heavy duty full length cleaning rod stored under the barrel. The barrel is retained by a spring in the fore-end and has two sling mounting points, one at the side one underneath. The semi-pistol grip butt stock has both a side mount for the sling and a conventional sling swivel under. Conventional 5-shot internal Nagant magazine. The stock has a heavy steel butt-plate which is not numbered. Just behind the action, within the wrist is an armoury repair – where a Knot has been drilled out of the timber and plugged with a turned hard wood plug, to avoid failure at a later date.
Very good bore, no pitting or misting. The rifling is strong and very clean. The rifle is fitted with a sling. An interesting and relatively rare variation of the famous Mosin-Nagant.
