1941 M39 Finnish Nagant Bolt Action Rifle……SOLD
Created on April 24th 2014
A Very Good WW2 Model 1939 Finnish Nagant with matching numbers.
This rifle is basically an improved Nagant. Standard Mosin-Nagant bolt and action, chambered in 7.62R.
Serial number 42662 on breech end of barrel and one hexagonal face of the action. The serial number is repeated on the bolt. 47″ in overall length. Round blued barrel 26.3/4″ long. The breech is marked as follows; “boxed S.A./ VKT design / D / 42662 / 1941.” which means in the same order; Sako /barrel made by Valtion Kivaaritehdas (a state rifle factory at Jyvaskyla)/chamber modified for D type bullet/serial number/ date of manufacture.
The Finnish fitted stock is of a higher quality than the original, having noticeably denser timber than the original would have had therefore making it heavier. It has a high grade protective finish all over, but most importantly the fore end is finger-jointed just in-front of the grasping grooves. This has been done extremely well, by machine, obviously an in factory job. The main idea behind the finger-jointing was to prevent the stocks warping under the extreme conditions experienced in Finland. It also enables shorter blanks to be used in the production process, therefore keeping costs down. The weighty combination of the heavy barrel and the jointed stock gives the marksman a steady base and helps improve accuracy. Also to help each side has a finger grove. On the RHS of the butt-stock is a small cartouche, which looks the be the letter “L” within a circle, over crossed batons or swords, this is the mark of the stockmaking depot.
The rear sights have been replaced with another unit and are graduated to 1000 meters when down and 2000 meters when upright. The side of the replacement sight block has some graduations; “2 , 3, 4, 6, 8.” Clear range markings are visible on the LHS of the base. The blade fore-sight is protected by two upright “ears” and is adjustable by screws on the outside of the assembly. Turns of the screw are graduated around the screw head on the LHS. Correct muzzle cap included.
The bayonet fitting and nose cap are hinged with a hole for the heavy duty full length cleaning rod stored under the barrel. The barrel is retained by a spring in the fore-end and has two sling mounting points, one at the side one underneath. The semi-pistol grip butt stock has both a side mount for the sling and a conventional sling swivel under. Conventional 5-shot internal Nagant magazine, the base plate being partially numbered to the rifle with “2662”. The stock has a heavy steel butt-plate which is not numbered.
The bore is in excellent condition with NO flaws, bright surfaces and very strong sharp rifling. These rifles are known for their accuracy – this one looks like it will live up to that reputation.
British proofs applied.
