British No 4 Mk I Enfield Rifle……( f 563 ) SOLD
Created on September 28th 2016
A very good plain No 4 Mk I British Enfield Rifle
Chambered in .303 with a ten round detachable box magazine numbered to the rifle. The rifle measures a standard 44″ in length. The round blacked barrel is 25.1/2″ long. The trigger pull is 13.1/4.” The rifle is obviously stocked in a much less common lighter coloured beech wood which is heavily varnished. All the metalwork is covered in several layers of matt black paint but this has protected the rifle over time, so even now, 68 years later, it is still in very good condition.
Of standard No 4 MK I specification with the ability to take the spike bayonet on the front. The action sidewall is marked as follows; “No 4 MKI (F) / 8/48 PF 34300” This has been applied by electro-pencil. The “F” stands for Fazakerley where it was produced in August 1948. On the receiver ring forward of these markings is a gas escape hole and to the rear on the same side, the Enfield safety. The safety is applied by pulling the catch towards the rear of the rifle. Standard No4 cocking piece of rectangular form. The matching serial number is marked on the rear facing flat of the bolt arm. The bolt knob is drilled hollow and the removable bolt head is a number one fitment. The action is clean, rapid and smooth.
An open battle sight is mounted on the base of the ladder sight for close range. Once the ladder is flipped up then the longer range aperture sights come into use and are graduated from 200 to 1300 yards. Being a five-groove bore these No 4 rifles were highly accurate for a battle rifle produced in such number. The five-groove bore is in excellent condition with deep sharp edged rifling which is clean and completely free of any corrosion. The crown is regular with no damage. The hand-guard over the barrel is in two pieces the rear section machined with the four flutes. The underside of the fore-end is marked with the rifles serial number.
The front sight is protected with the usual ears. The two sling swivels are still in position, the front hung by the mid-band and the rear fixed into the underside of the butt-stock. The butt-plate is if the cast brass type with trap for cleaning equipment. On opening the trap there is one correct new and unused black oil bottle with leather washer.
The rifle is in very good condition and although seems to have been fully involved in military service has not suffered unduly for the experience. A very good number 4, freshly London proofed in 2016.
