A good shooting Model 92 Winchester in the desirable calibre .44-40
A good Saddle Ring Carbine with its original iron ring still in position, in its standard carbine specifications. Most noticeable is the musket style butt and butt-plate. The rifle has the serial number 45441 on the underside of the action. The serial number puts production in the year 1894. This rifle is chambered in the popular .44 WCF but unlike many of its contemporary rifles in that calibre it has a reasonably good bore. Certainly the small patches of pitting within the bore do not take away any of its shooting ability (see the photo of good group)
This carbine has been refinished over a small degree of surface pitting but this does not subtract from the overall appearance of the weapon. This 92 carbine is 37.1/2″ in length with a round barrel of approx’ 20″ with a full length magazine tube under. The makers address is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the contemporary replacement rear sight and reads as follows in two lines: “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO . NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. This is not a shortened rifle but an original carbine, the woodwork and the barrel bands along with the musket butt attest to that.
The top tang of the rifle, behind the hammer is marked with the model designation: “MODEL 1892 / WINCHESTER / PAT. OCT 1894” There are clear British Government View and Proof marks on both the bolt and the barrel. The timber used in the stocking of these carbines was not the strongest variety but this example has worn well and though showing around 123 years of handling is not damaged to any detrimental level. There are no signs of splitting or shakes within the grain and the stock remains functional for its original purpose. The action is perfectly functional though a little soft in operation. A fine survivor from the last days of the wild west in the classic calibre most sought after by collectors of old lever guns.
