A Good Antique 1873 Round Barrelled Rifle in .38 wcf
An all over untouched 1873 in a usable Winchester caliber. A very pleasing patina covers the whole rifle with very few screw heads showing any sign of mollestation by the happy amature.
Of standard specification with 24″ round barrel. Over all length from muzzle to butt plate top 43″. Full length magazine tube under barrel, a nice brown. Barrel a nice brown with minimal pitting. Winchester details on top of barrel forward of sights reading in two lines; “WINCHESTER’S – REPEATING – ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING’S IMPROVEMENT – MARCH 29 1866. OCTOBER 16 1860” Caliber marking forward of the breech on top of barrel .38 WCF
Buckhorn sights and silver tipped fore sight. The American Walnut Stocks are in very good condition with light dents and scratches consumate with its age – nothing serious, no chips, cracks or splits with a nice polishes finish from use. Wood to metal fits are all excellent and look undisturbed.
The action an even brown patina with most original finish absent. Side plates the same. Sliding dust cover on top of action with serrated rear exposing brass cartridge lifter. Underside engraved with caliber 38 CAL. Hammer when cocked reveals some case-colour hardening, good cross hatched hammer spur. The upper tang has the words “MODEL 1873” and the lower tang the serial number 345224B for 1888. The underlever still retains the locking lug for storage or travel – (no use in shootin yer horses foot off!. ) The action is smooth. The bore is good and the rifling strong. The fore-end cap and cresent steel butt pate have a degree of finish mixed deeply with a mellow brown, and the butt plate has the brass sliding hatch for cleaning gear.
This is a grand old lady who has been treated with respect and deserves to be in her long future.
