MARLIN 1894 Lever Action Rifle in .25-20….SOLD

Created on October 31st 2012

An 1894 Model Marlin in the unusual caliber of .25-20

Of standard specification with an octagonal 24″ barrel.  Marked on the top tang “Marlin / MODEL ’94”  The serial number, which is down on the lower front edge of the action is D4415.  Date of manufacture is thought to be 1920.

Two piece American Black Walnut stocks.  The butt stock with classic steel crescent moon butt plate and the for-end with metal nose cap.  The caliber is marked on the top flat at the rear of the barrel  “.25 – 20 M” .  Between the buck-horn rear sights and the silver fore-sight are the following markings over two lines, once again on the top flat; “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CT , U.S.A.  /  PATENTED. OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUGUST 1. 1893”    There is a full length tubular magazine mounted under the barrel.

Side opening bolt showing minor blueing, with sprung blued loading gate underneath.  The under lever is rectangular in appearance.  Most of the original blueing is lost.  The metal has all turned plumb-brown to grey with high edge wear especially on the barrel.

The action cylces nicely and the bore is reasonable.  This is an interesting caliber to shoot.  The stocks are in good condition with an even finish and colour all over, with no signs of any problems.  At the toe of the butt there is a slight shortage of wooden material, possibly due to over zealous sanding at some time.  The wood around the back of the action and the upper tang are suffering from a similar complaint, but in no way does this distract from this pleasant and interesting little Marlin rifle.
