WW II 1943 PU Sniper Re-issued to Poland in 1958
A genuine WW II M91/30 PU Sniper’s Rifle built in 1943 then refurbed by the Poles in 1958. Chambered in 7.62 x 54R with a five shot internal, single stack magazine. Correct, matching “bent” bolt finished in the white. The balance of the rifle is standard military blue with virtually no wear showing as re-finished by the Poles in 1958. Stock in superb armoury repaired condition with overall smooth finish. The repairs are regularly completed infills of timber where needed – finished flush.
The barrel shank bears all the details of the rifles life story in its markings;- “Soviet Hammer & Cycle within laurel leaves /1943 r / Cyrillic rk 5159 / Izhevsk arrow within a Triangle.” On the LHS of the same is the original scope number that the rifle was mated with;- “Cyrillic “A” 113674.” As the Polish Armouries refinished these rifles, most of the markings show a small amount of loss where the cleaning removed small portions of the same. From that point onwards the rifle has remained untouched ! The serial number is repeated on the heel of the steel butt-plate, and the floor-plate of the magazine. As mentioned above the “5159” is on the rib of the bolt, clearly visible.
The scope mount is the original as the rough machining can still be appreciated, as can the original small acceptance marks despite the extra polishing. The scope is the correct but Polish marked PU scope with twin turrets and three point reticule. The twin turrets affect windage and elevation. All the screws are the correct slotted type. The top of the scope barrel is marked as follows;- “Single star / Hammer & Cycle / 91/30 / No(Cyrillic)5 – 14897 / WZR – 58″ The WZR indicates a Polish issued scope. The evidence all ties together for the rifle that now stands before us.
Standard military specification for an M91/30 with regular open rear sights, graduated from 100 to 2000 yards, no windage and open “U” sight picture. Single post front sight within protective ring. Full length cleaning rod under barrel. The rifle itself is 48.1/2″ long. The round barrel is a nominal 29″ long. The trigger Pull to centre is 13.1/2″. The follower within the magazine is strongly blued and shows no signs of use. Action is smooth. Bore is excellent with no pitting or misting and a good depth of rifling, very little sign of use.
An excellent example of the famous PU Sniper as used in WW II and beyond with a clearly traceable pedigree. Unlikely to be a rush assembly job thrown together when the Eastern Block disintegrated.
