Romanian M44 Carbine with folding Bayonet……………….. (F 1210)
Created on January 11th 2025
Good Post War Romainian M 44 Carbine
A very close copy of the Russian M44 Carbine in all but markings really (and final build quality!) Chambered in the standard Russian calibre of 7.62 x 54R. Regular Mosin-Nagant action with short arm straight bolt. Can be loaded with a clip from above with five rounds. Clip guides in front of rear part of the action (split bridge) Overall length 40″. Round blued barrel 20.1/4″. Trigger Pull is 13.1/2″ to centre. Round action. Artic Birch stock with slots cut for sling mounting with pressed metal escutcheons to resist wear and resist wear. Finger grooved stock with straight wrist. Steel butt-plate with maching number – blued.
The carbine has a sprung, folding, cruxiform bayonet, with a flat screwdriver tip. To be used it has to be hand manipulated into and out of position. Once in position, it locks firmly, with no wobble. When stowed, pointing rewards, along the waistline of the stock it is also effectively out of the way. Bayonet blade is 12.1/4″ long and will hurt! There is a cleaning rod stowed under the barrel. The front sight consists of an adjustable ringed post. The rear sights are of the sliding tangent type with shorter range markings for a carbine. Graduations from 100 to 1000 meters.
The carbines serial number is “GV601”. The rounded receiver is unmarked, however the first section of the barrel, also round is marked thus;- “Romanian Crest/1954/GV601/arrowhead in a triangle” There are other incomplete inspection marks along the sides of the same. The spine of the bolt is marked “4601” and on the rear top section with the Romanian arrowhead in a triangle. Along the sides of the spine there are other, harder to discifer inspectors stampings. The external base plate of the magazine carries the same number as the barrel “GV601”
The LHS of the butt-stock has a single Arrowhead within a Triangle mark. The RHS has a slightly larger marking consisting of a solid triangle with the following within;- “F/115/M A” This is a known Romanian stock marking. Adjacent to the triangle is a diamond shape containing a single “C” – meaning currently unknown. On top of the comb, towards the rear and the cut-out for the butt-plate tang is another known Romainian marking a “6” within a circle. The tang of the butt-plate has the serial number and the “C” within a triangle; another comon Romanian marking. Some blueing remains on the butt-plate.
Finish all over on the metal components is very strong, there is only the slightest high edge wear. The stockwork still has its original finish but shows the singns of a normal military life with light dents or scratches. The stock about the wrist, remains solid and is undamaged. Strong rifling with 4 deep grooves. Only the slightest start of corrosion at the base of the grooves indicates some uasge. Altogether this rifle has a long life left in it yet! BUT, be prepared for its kick….!
An unusual addition to the Nagant collector’s armoury, recently re-proofed as a matter of course after import from the USA.
