Rare Chilean Model 1912 Mauser by Steyr
A rare rifle to find in either short or long – The Chilean Mauser. Very similar to the Colombian or Mexican Model 1912, the Chilean type is the least numerous, especially as the full length rifle. Chambered in 7 x 57mm with standard Mauser features. An internal magazine of five rounds. Straight armed Mauser turn-bolt system with three position flag seaftey to rear. Bolt release at rear LHS of action. Action finished in the white with a fine Chilean crest on top of receiver with “MODELO 1912” under. The LHS at the woodwork line is the serial number “B.3950” and two makers marks. The outside of the action wall is marked “WAFFENFABRIK STEYR / AUSTRIA”.
The bolt, also in the white is matching with the number repeated along the top of the bolt arm. Other bolt components carry the last two digits of the serial number. Magazine floorplate and trigger guard also matching. Unfortunately this rifle has suffered a huge calamity at some point and the main one-piece stock has been replaced with another serviceable unit. The number on the stock is “D 1711”. The LHS of the butt-stock bares the Chilean acceptance mark with the date “1912” at the base.
Overall the rifle measures 49″. The round blued barrel is 29.1/4″ long. The trigger Pull to centre is 13″ Single piece semi-pistol grip stock with handguard surrounding rear sight. Unmarked steel ID disc in centre RHS of butt. Shaped steel butt-plate and vacant sling swivel base on underside of stock. Mid band has front sling swivel under. “H” type front band with hook and bayonet lug. Half length cleaning rod. The rear sights are graduated from 300 to 2000 meters. Front sight on a block with checkered rear slope to avoid glare.
The stock is a natural walnut, light brown colour with a single cross-bolt. Lock screws in position on main action screws. Rifle complete and mechanically sound. Very clean and strong 4-groove bore. The stock’s surface shows wounds consistant with a colourful service life and an intriguing dent in the LH fore-end which I really want to be shrapnel damage! Fully cleaned and serviced, proofed and ready for an active retirement. A rare breed of the mark for the serious Mauser connoisseur, proofed and ready to go.
