Argentine Model 1909 Mauser by DWM
In very basic terms the Modelo 1909 was almost an identical rifle to the more well known Gew 98. Some variations immediatly throw the observer but the basics are the same. Its the same action as the Gew 98 with a straight arm bolt handle, a Mauser flag safety system and an internal 5-shot magazine. However, it looks very different at first glance. The handguard over the barrel is larger than the Gew and it surrounds the rear sight. That instantly recognisable high-hump rear sight on the Gew, the Lange Visseur has been replaced by a flatter profile tangent sight. The bayonet fixing arrangements look like a larger affair, but are infact, a clever modification, designed to use up stocks of perfectly usable leftover bayonets which were languishing in stock. Also we are not used to seeing the bright action and bolts of the M 1909, the reason being many were never used – unlike the Gew 98’s.
Chambered in 7.65 x 53mm there are cut-aways in the front of the rear action bridge to accept a stripper clip for rapid loading. This is complimented by a cut-out in the sidewall of the action which allows the thumb to fully depress rounds into the magazine. The rifle is a full 49″ long. The round barrel is 29″ long and the Pull is 13″ to center. One peice stock with semi-pistol grip and hand guard over the barrel. Approximately half of the length of the barrel is exposed toward the muzzle. The crest on the receiver is intact and clearly shows all its detail. The RHS of the receiver is marked;- “MAUSER MODELO / ARGENTINO 1909” The side wall outer is also marked “DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND / MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN”. The LHS of the reciver shows the matching serial number “H0991” This is repeated on the stock below. Another little Argentinian quirk is the extended bolt removal arm, which curves up over the rear of the action.
The upper surface of the straight bolt arm is also clearly marked with the matching serial number. There also appear many Argentine acceptance marks on most parts of the rifle. One quaint example is the “shaking hands” design which is clearly marked on the flag safety. (Shaking, as in a greeting – not Elvis!) Another of these is the Traditional Argentine floppy cap design also on the bolt arm. This is repeated on the baseplate surrounding the floor-plate of the magazine, next to the matching serial number. Gew type retention spring clips holding the mid-band and the front “H” band over the barrel. Twin sling swivels. Argentinian crest impressed into th RHS of the butt-stock. Steel shaped butt-plate – no colour.
The tangent rear sights are graduated from 300 to 2000. Front sight is an inverted “V” on a ramp with the rear angled surface, cross-hatched to reduce glare. Another oddity the Argentinians insisted on was an internal latch to release the floor-plate of the magazine, accessible from the inside of the trigger guard. The dark walnut stock does bare whitness to a life in the military, by dings, dents and scratches but there is nothing of concern that shows. This M 1909 has a very good bore with strong rifling and no sdisruption, misting or pitting. Freshly proofed upon arrival. An interesting and unusual Mauser ready for its next keeper.
