Korean War type “Sniper” rifle with Lyman Alaskan Scope..(F 1072)
Created on March 25th 2023
Built on a Genuine Remington A3 with correct parts
A very good built-up US Sniper Rifle that would have been correct for the Korean War period. An excellent Remington produced 03-A3 has been selected for the base of this build. Standard configuration of the Mauser – type bolt action rifle made by Remington in WW II. Chambered in .30-06 with a five-shot internal magazine. The rifle does not have the of-set markings of a genuine A4 Sniper rifle so the serial number is partially obscured on the receiver. It is however; “3786299” which puts production as July 1943, and as such is displaying all the correct fittings and parts for such a vintage rifle. The markings on the barrel at the muzzle read; “R. A. / flaming bomb / 8 – 43.”
The rifle is set in a very fine twin cross-bolt “C” stock – with pistol grip. There are very few marks or damage to the high gloss finish and also no cartouches. All the furniture, as mentioned above, are of the stamp or rolled steel type, which is correct for the period. Full length hand-guard over barrel and front sights removed. Fine checkerd Remington butt-plate with hatch for cleaning bottle, a/f. The original rear sights are removed to allow for the mounting of the unmarked Redfield sight mount.
Fixed within the mounting system is the Lyman Alaskan 2.1/2 power scope. It is 10.1/2″ long and has covered adjustment turrets for elevation and windage, which adjust freely. The mounts and the scope are both in their original blued finish and display a good degree of remaining colour. The rifle also displays the correct mixture of finish to its parts in that grey green Parkerising is mixed with blued components. The turret blocks on the scope have the wording “ALL – WEATHER” upon the upper surface of each. The LHS of the scope has the makers details and patent numbers as well as a serial number. Minor high edge wear to the exterior of the scope body – good image with fine cross hair reticule. Fine two-grove bore with no corrosion visible and good rifling, no pitting or misting.
This is an inexpensive way to get into shooting a scoped War time US service rifle. If a genuine A4, we would be looking at twice the price at least. Recently UK proofed. Standard size and weight with a good balance to the rifle with the scope attached. Once re-zeroed to the new keepers eye this rifle should be capable of some impressive scores on the range. A genuine set up and one not so often encountered, but one that had its time and did its work when called upon.
