Mossberg M44 Training Rifle………………… (F 1202)

A good Mossberg Training Rifle

Many allied recruits might have found one of these being issued for their first or introductory session on a live rifles.  A high reliable, simple sturdy bolt action repeater which would easily instill the basics of marsmanship into any new shooter.  Not only were they extensively used by the forces but, Mossberg (having been around the longest as a family run business in the USA),  these would have been sold extensively on a private basis. This example is one of the civilian sold examples as it does not have the “U.S. PROPERTY” marking on it.  The rifle presents the shooter with all one needs to know about bolt action rifle shooting.  These were also brought to England under the Lend Lease arrangement during the Second World War.

Chambered in .22LR with a detachable magazine but no visible serial number (even when fully stripped down)   This Mossberg trainer is 43.1/2″ in overall length.  The round heavy barrel is 26″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.1/2″ to centre. Single piece American Black Walnut stock with full pistol grip.  No hand-guard, so barrel is exposed for its full length.  The top of the barrel marked ;- “O.F.MOSSBERG & SONS,INC /NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A./44 us.a  .22 L.R. PATT.”  Steel horrizontaly ribbed steel butt-plate and two quick release sling swivles.  The rifle comes with a thin leather sling. Brass “popper” showed verdigrise.  Shaped black plastic pistol grip and trigger guard. Serrated trigger.

Simpily constructed swept bolt arm.  There is a saftey catch at the rear of the action which is easily thumbed from side to side in correspondance with two dot indicators, one red the other green signifying Safe & Fire. The action is slotted to accept the magazine coming from below.  Magazine release catch under the rifle. Wide ejection port allowing spent cartridges to easily clear action. Some wear to the blued finish around this opening.  Adjacent to the ejection point, on the opposite exposed quarter of the action, are two blanking screws.  These rifles can also be fitted with a scope and this is the purpose of the two blanked screw holes.

Pressed steel Mossberg Micrometer sight in position at the rear of the action with much adjustment in all planes by simple use of serrated wheels – folds longditudinaly with rifle for transport.  Front sight compliments rear as also made in pressed steel with multiple changable front pointers.  Stock work is in fine condition with NO major damage.  Action is fine and mechanically sound – having just passed re-proof.  An excellent rifle to learn the basics on, or to experience a bucket load of nostalgia which will take you back to your boyhood shooting days.  I don’t usually get over excited about the Mossbergs as a breed. I feel that the stocks always seem just a little too heavy for the size of the rifle, however, there is something different about this particular example; everything seems right, it doesn’t feel clumpy.  It may be as simple as the state of the blueing to the rifle.  To me this is a very nice example of this type of trainer whether it be civilian or Military.
